Chariho put another win on the board Wednesday, but Cumberland has been giving us reasons to keep watching.

The Clippers’ 2–0 loss on October 7 came against an unbeaten Chargers team sitting atop Division I and ranked No. 1 in Rhode Island by MaxPreps. Give Chariho its due. They’ve earned that spot, and taking them on was always going to ask something of these boys.

Cumberland had been building toward that test over the past few weeks. After sharing the points with North Providence in a 2–2 draw and finishing a goal short against Barrington, the Clippers found a little traction. They beat Central 2–1, came away from Portsmouth with a 1–1 tie, then put five past Tolman in a 5–1 win on October 2.

Those results start to add up. A team working to find its footing was finding goals, picking up results and giving itself something to carry into the next match. Wednesday put a loss on the record, but the progress that brought Cumberland into that game still belongs to them.

There is encouragement in a two-goal margin against an unbeaten opponent, especially alongside those recent results. The score alone doesn’t tell us how every stretch played out, but it gives the loss some perspective. Cumberland went into a demanding matchup after showing it could find goals and collect results. Those are steps forward this group can take into the next game.

And the next game is already here.

Cumberland visits South Kingstown tonight, Friday, October 9, for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Old Mountain Field. The Rebels handed Chariho its only draw, a scoreless meeting on September 16. There will be another result to earn down there.

After tonight, the remaining schedule includes trips to Cranston West on October 14 and La Salle Academy on October 17, North Providence at home October 19, East Providence away October 21 and East Greenwich at home October 22. October still has plenty left to ask of these Clippers.

For now, the opportunity is Friday night. Bring the confidence from Tolman, build on the results that came before it, and give South Kingstown a Cumberland team still working for a stronger finish.
