Earlier this season, Cumberland’s varsity boys soccer team had to ask younger players to take on bigger roles. With upperclassmen unavailable to participate, the Clippers were gaining experience while trying to find their footing against varsity competition.

Those lessons came with the games still counting.

On Saturday, October 17, Cumberland earned a 0–0 draw at No. 1 La Salle in Division I, another encouraging result for a team that continues to look more comfortable with the challenges in front of it.

The story here reaches beyond one afternoon. These Clippers have been asked to adapt, and their response throughout the season deserves attention. Younger players were given responsibility early, with an opportunity to grow into roles they might otherwise have waited to fill. As a group, Cumberland has continued to move forward.

Week by week, the Clippers have looked better, regardless of the competition across from them. A scoreless draw with La Salle gives that growth a meaningful measuring point. Against the team at the top of Division I, Cumberland kept a clean sheet and came away on level terms.

There is still work ahead, but this group has given Cumberland plenty to appreciate about the way it has handled the work already put in front of it.

An early season need to lean on youth has become part of a larger story about a team finding its way. And the Clippers keep giving us reasons to follow where it goes next.
