Cumberland’s boys soccer team kept its late-season push moving Monday night, beating North Providence 2–0 at Tucker Field behind goals from Lucas Balcarcel and Caleb Moran.
Another win. Another clean sheet. And a Clippers team that is giving people a reason to pay attention as the Division I playoff picture takes shape.
This season has asked Cumberland to work through adversity and find its footing. The results did not always come easily, but this group has continued to come together. Now that progress is showing up with some consistency.
Monday’s victory extended Cumberland’s unbeaten run to four matches. The Clippers beat South Kingstown 2–0 and Cranston West 2–1 before playing La Salle to a scoreless draw. Add the North Providence win, and Cumberland has outscored its opponents 6–1 during a stretch that includes three shutouts.
Balcarcel and Moran supplied Monday’s goals, but the zero on the other side deserves its share of the attention. Allowing just one goal over four matches gives the Clippers a foundation they can carry into close games. They are giving themselves a chance to win without needing a scoring outburst every night.
The La Salle result stands out in that conversation. Holding one of Division I’s leading teams scoreless showed Cumberland could compete in that company. Following it with another shutout win kept the momentum moving.
That is what makes this group an interesting team to watch down the stretch. Cumberland has taken its lumps, regrouped, and put together a run that gives some substance to the idea that it could be a dangerous postseason opponent. There is still work ahead, but the Clippers are playing their way into that conversation.
Cumberland is scheduled to visit East Providence on Wednesday, October 21, before hosting East Greenwich on Thursday, October 22, with both matches set for 6:30 p.m.
The Clippers are rolling. Those next two tests offer a chance to carry that momentum right to the doorstep of the playoffs.
