Cumberland followed Monday’s 2–1 win over Central with a 1–1 tie against Portsmouth on Wednesday, September 30. The Clippers enter October at 3–6–3, unbeaten in their last two games.
The longer view offers a little more encouragement, too. MaxPreps reports Cumberland is 3–2–2 since its four-game losing streak ended. That stretch includes Wednesday’s draw against a Portsmouth team now 3–4–4. The Clippers still have work to do, but the recent record gives their progress something firmer than a hopeful description.
The Portsmouth result carries a little more weight in the standings. Central was a nonleague game; Wednesday’s tie earned Cumberland a point in Division I. There’s still ground to make up, but it’s a result worth taking into the next game.
There’s some context in the shared opponents, too. Both teams lost 3–2 to Barrington. Portsmouth also held North Kingstown to a 1–0 loss and tied South Kingstown and Cranston West. Those scores don’t predict what comes next, but they give Wednesday’s draw some perspective against a team that has played several close division games.
Cumberland hosts Tolman on Friday, October 2, at 6:30 p.m., after winning their earlier meeting 3–2. Road games at Chariho on October 7 and South Kingstown on October 9 follow, with Cranston West on October 14 and La Salle on October 17.
A win and a tie make for a productive finish to September. The next stretch will give the Clippers a chance to build on it.
