Chariho handed Cumberland a 2–0 loss Wednesday. Friday, the Clippers took that score south and put themselves on the winning side of it.
Cumberland beat South Kingstown 2–0 on October 9, bringing home a league win and a shutout to close the week. A good response, with something to show for it.
Before turning the page completely, though, give that Chariho game its proper weight. The Chargers came out of Wednesday 15–0–1, ranked No. 1 in Rhode Island by MaxPreps, with only seven goals allowed across those 16 matches. That is a program making life difficult for just about everybody on its schedule. Cumberland’s two-goal loss came against a very good opponent. That matters when you look at the week as a whole.
You still want the win. Of course you do. But a tough night against that kind of team doesn’t erase what the Clippers have been building. Friday gave them the chance to take something back, and they did.
Two goals on one end. A zero on the other. Both belong in the headline.
The result gives Cumberland two wins in its last three matches, with the Chariho loss between a 5–1 victory over Tolman and Friday’s shutout. There is room to build here, and putting wins on either side of a difficult test is a good place to start.
Cranston West is next, Wednesday, October 14, at 6 p.m., before a trip to La Salle on Saturday, October 17. Another demanding stretch ahead—but the Clippers head into it with a road win in their pocket.
