CUMBERLAND — The early setbacks are still part of Cumberland’s season. So is the response.

The Clippers delivered their biggest scoring night of the year Friday, October 2, defeating Tolman 5–1 at home and giving a group growing into its varsity responsibilities another result to build on.

For Cumberland, this season has required patience. Less experienced players have stepped into meaningful roles, learning against a schedule that offers few easy afternoons. Finding combinations and gaining confidence takes time, especially when those lessons come with difficult results.

Lately, there has been more encouragement. A 2–1 road victory over Central on September 28 was followed by a 1–1 draw with Portsmouth on September 30. Friday’s win made it three straight matches without a loss.

That progression matters. Cumberland earned a close win, stayed level in another competitive matchup, then produced a four-goal margin against Tolman. For players still establishing themselves at this level, those results provide something concrete to carry into the next practice.

Tolman came into the matchup searching for its own turnaround. According to MaxPreps’ postgame report, the Tigers fell to 1–9–1 with their eighth consecutive defeat, while Cumberland improved to 4–6–3 overall.

The opponent’s struggles give the result context, but Cumberland still had to take advantage of the opportunity. Five goals offered an encouraging sign for an attack working toward greater consistency.

The victory also counted in Division I play, making it valuable beyond the confidence boost. With league matches remaining, Cumberland has an opportunity to keep improving its position while developing the experience it will need down the stretch.

The next scheduled test is a trip to Chariho on Wednesday, October 7, at 6:30 p.m.

Cumberland’s work continues. But after a difficult opening stretch, the Clippers are giving themselves more reasons to trust it.
