Cumberland’s girls did not need one runner to carry the whole story at Bowdoin Park. They brought a scoring pack.
The Clippers won the girls Varsity Division II race at the September 26 Bowdoin Park XC Classic in Wappingers Falls, New York, scoring 29 points to finish ahead of La Salle Academy’s 44. Paul VI was third with 74 and Princeton fourth with 75. Cumberland placed first among seven scoring teams.
Five finishers, one strong statement
Caylee Kurbec led Cumberland in third, with Cecelia Ludwig right behind in fourth. Natalie Crawford and Gabriella Stoothoff gave the Clippers four runners in the top eight, and Anna Bianchi closed the scoring group in 13th.
That is the part of this result that travels well into the rest of the season. The five Cumberland finishers were separated by just 1:08.35. When teammates stay that close, opponents have fewer openings to break up the scoring group.
| Race place | Cumberland runner | 5K time |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Caylee Kurbec | 19:33.83 |
| 4 | Cecelia Ludwig | 19:44.90 |
| 6 | Natalie Crawford | 20:07.56 |
| 8 | Gabriella Stoothoff | 20:22.00 |
| 13 | Anna Bianchi | 20:42.18 |
The published results also list Charlotte Pryor as DNF, without a finishing time. No reason is given, so there is no basis here for an injury explanation.
The outlook is encouraging: Cumberland has several runners capable of taking places near the front, rather than relying on a single standout. Maintaining that pack and having more finishers available behind it will matter as the fields get deeper. A September division victory is evidence of strength, not a guarantee of a championship in November.
Magill and Rivello give the boys a front pair
The Cumberland boys finished eighth of 11 scoring teams in Varsity Division II with 217 points. Bishop Hendricken won the race with 24.
Cooper Magill finished 29th in 17:41.07, and Brayden Rivello followed in 33rd at 17:45.76. Just 4.69 seconds separated them. Rivello’s performance gives Cumberland a second runner close to its leader, an encouraging piece of the lineup as the season develops.
| Race place | Cumberland runner | 5K time |
|---|---|---|
| 29 | Cooper Magill | 17:41.07 |
| 33 | Brayden Rivello | 17:45.76 |
| 60 | Patrick Bickerstaff | 19:11.01 |
| 61 | Tyler Pinch | 19:16.33 |
| 64 | Jackson Thurston | 19:24.86 |
| 72 | Nathaniel Tuomisto | 20:10.94 |
Patrick Bickerstaff, Tyler Pinch and Jackson Thurston finished within 13.85 seconds of each other. Nathaniel Tuomisto completed Cumberland’s six published boys finishes.
The boys’ next opportunity is clear: bring that middle pack closer to Magill and Rivello. There was an 85.25-second gap between Cumberland’s second and third finishers. Closing it would give the Clippers more chances to move through opposing scoring groups together.
There is something to build on at both ends of the lineup. The front pair stayed connected, and the next three stayed connected with each other. Turning those two groups into a tighter five is the challenge ahead.
