A shutout to start the week. An overtime test on Senior Night. Cumberland field hockey found itself in two very different games, with both adding to its October story.
The Clippers beat Classical 2–0 in Providence on Monday, October 5. Junior Tessa Nicastro scored both goals, while Cumberland kept Classical off the scoreboard. The junior varsity team also won, completing a successful day at both levels.
Wednesday, October 7, brought Cranston Co-op and Senior Night. Delaney Eckman and Annie Collins scored for Cumberland, but the visitors prevailed 3–2 in overtime. The Clippers finished on the tough side of a one-goal result on a night recognizing their seniors.
Those results follow other close tests: a 3–2 overtime loss to Lincoln School and a fourth-quarter comeback to earn a 2–2 draw against Lincoln High. In that comeback, Eckman scored with an assist from senior captain Payton Jolicoeur before Jolicoeur converted the tying penalty stroke.
Monday supplied another clean sheet. Wednesday supplied another reminder of the fine margins in a game that reaches extra time. The Clippers carry both experiences into the remaining season, with work still ahead and plenty of competitive field hockey behind them.
