The Cumberland Clippers girls varsity field hockey team traveled to Classical Friday and came home with a hard-earned 1–0 victory.
Cumberland wasted little time creating the game’s decisive moment. With 13:17 remaining in the first quarter, Delaney Eckman finished an assist from Tessa Nicastro to give the Clippers an early 1–0 advantage.
From there, Cumberland’s defense made that one goal stand. Goaltender Emma Maccio stopped all three Classical attempts that reached the cage, finishing the afternoon with a shutout. At the other end, Classical goalkeeper Eleanor McGrane kept her team within striking distance by recording seven saves.
It was not a high-scoring win, but it was the kind of complete, disciplined performance that travels well: capitalize on an early opportunity, defend together and finish the job. Cumberland and Classical are scheduled to meet again on October 5.
