Cumberland’s varsity football team has packed plenty into the last few weeks. Back-to-back wins over South Kingstown and Barrington gave the Clippers something to build on. Senior quarterback Brady Smith earned WPRI’s Blitz 12 Player of the Week. Then came a difficult night against La Salle, followed by another opportunity to decide how this team finishes its regular-season stretch.
For the seniors, that opportunity carries a little extra weight. There is still football to play together, and these weeks are worth making count.
The 26–0 win over South Kingstown put Cumberland’s work on the scoreboard. After a difficult opening stretch, the Clippers delivered a shutout and gave themselves a chance to build some momentum. Holding an opponent scoreless takes a defense finishing possessions, while the offense supplied enough production to create separation.
The following week at Barrington, Cumberland had to earn that separation twice.
A 17–3 advantage eventually became a 17–17 tie, putting the Clippers in a spot where their response would decide the night. They answered. Smith broke loose for a long touchdown run, the defense followed with a fourth-down stop, and Smith later connected with Nathan Goodrich for another touchdown to help finish a 31–17 victory.
That sequence said plenty. Barrington had pushed its way back into the game. Cumberland gathered itself, made the next plays and finished.
Smith’s performance brought recognition beyond the Cumberland sideline. WPRI credited the senior with 403 total yards and four touchdowns against Barrington, and he collected 62% of the vote to earn its Blitz 12 Player of the Week honor. Two touchdown passes and two scoring runs gave the Eagles problems through the air and on the ground.
That is a pretty good week’s work.
It was a deserved moment for Smith, with plenty of teammates connected to the performance. Goodrich supplied the finishes downfield. The protection and blocking gave the offense opportunities to develop. The defense’s stop after Cumberland regained the lead helped put the ball back in Smith’s hands. Football gives us individual names to celebrate, but the best nights have a lot of fingerprints on them.
La Salle brought a different result on October 16, handing Cumberland a loss and ending the two-game winning streak. The Rams earned their win. For the Clippers, the task now is to take the lessons from that game into the next week’s preparation and turn them into better execution.
They have already shown they can respond when a game gets away from the script. Now they need that response between games.
Cumberland hosts Newton North in a nonconference matchup Friday, October 23, followed by a league game against Central on Friday, October 30. Both are scheduled for 7 p.m. Those two October dates offer a chance to regain momentum, sharpen the details and finish this stretch with the kind of football the Clippers showed during their wins. A Thanksgiving trip to Woonsocket on November 26 also remains on the schedule.
For the seniors, there is another part of the season running alongside the results.
Senior year has a way of making familiar routines feel different as the calendar moves along. Another practice. Another bus ride. Another chance to pull on the same jersey as the guys beside you. Things that once seemed like they would always be there begin to carry more meaning.
Years from now, the memories can come back in pieces: a touchdown, a teammate’s celebration, something said in the huddle, or a difficult night the group got through together. The friendships built through football can last long after anyone remembers the exact standings.
Whether football continues beyond high school or this becomes their final season in pads, these players will never have this exact team together again. That gives the remaining weeks value for everyone, from the seniors leading the group to the younger players learning what will eventually be asked of them.
There is still room to improve, still work to finish and still time to enjoy being teammates.
Friday brings another kickoff at Tucker Field. Another chance to play well for Cumberland. Another night these seniors may be talking about years from now.
