Cumberland’s girls soccer team came home from East Providence with a clean sheet Monday, but without the win. The Clippers and Townies finished 0–0, moving Cumberland to 7–1–1 overall with a major road test at La Salle Academy coming Friday.
For a Cumberland team that had scored 26 goals in its first eight games, being held scoreless was a departure from its early-season form. The Clippers had just beaten Moses Brown 4–1. Monday kept another loss off the record, but it also left an opportunity on the field.
East Providence moved to 4–4–3 overall. The Townies have shown they can make games difficult, although their results have been mixed. They beat Moses Brown 1–0 and South Kingstown 1–0, added wins over Wheeler and North Providence, and came into Monday off a 2–2 draw with Prout.
The common opponents help put this result in perspective. Cumberland beat Lincoln 3–1; East Providence lost to Lincoln 4–0. Cumberland beat South Kingstown 6–0; the Townies recorded a 1–0 win and a 1–1 draw against the Rebels. Both beat Moses Brown, with Cumberland winning 4–1 and East Providence winning 1–0.
Those comparisons favored Cumberland entering the matchup. They also show why East Providence deserved to be taken seriously without dressing the Townies up as a powerhouse. Their losses included Mt. Hope, East Greenwich and Portsmouth, along with Lincoln. Monday was a strong result for East Providence and a reminder for Cumberland that earlier scorelines cannot win the next game.
The defensive side gives the Clippers something to carry forward. Monday was Cumberland’s fifth shutout in nine matches, with only five goals conceded across that stretch. Finding a way through at the other end now becomes the next challenge.
And Friday will demand it.
Cumberland is scheduled to visit La Salle Academy on October 2 at 5 p.m. The Rams followed Monday’s 2–2 draw with Bishop Feehan with a 2–0 win over Chariho on Wednesday, September 30, moving to 6–0–3 before hosting Cumberland. Chariho came out of that game at 5–4–1. La Salle arrives at Friday’s matchup with another clean sheet and its unbeaten record intact.
The Rams’ results explain the size of the test: wins over Mt. Hope, Cranston West, Lincoln, Bishop Guertin and East Greenwich, plus two scoreless draws with North Kingstown.
There is a useful comparison there, too. Cumberland split its two meetings with North Kingstown, winning 2–0 and losing 2–1. La Salle drew 0–0 both times. Both also beat Lincoln, with the Rams winning 5–2.
That gives Friday a compelling setup. Cumberland has already shown it can score and defend across a strong opening stretch. La Salle has yet to lose. A road win would strengthen the Clippers’ case among the division’s contenders; a competitive performance would offer another measure of where they stand as October begins.
