One more match going Cumberland’s way would have told a different story Monday. Instead, the Clippers finished on the tough side of a 4–3 loss to Ponaganset on October 5, a narrow result as girls tennis heads into the final stretch of the regular season.

Cumberland collected three of the seven matches, leaving the Clippers one victory away from turning the afternoon around. Close losses can be frustrating, but this one gives Cumberland a clear target heading into its next outing: find that fourth win.

With postseason spots determined by RPI, the remaining schedule carries weight beyond the win-loss column. Cumberland plays in Division II, where eight eligible teams will advance to the team playoffs. The Clippers’ exact standing still needs confirmation, but the opportunity ahead is to add results that strengthen their position before the regular season closes October 20.

The assigned schedule gives Cumberland a busy finish, with Lincoln High coming to town October 8 before road matches at North Smithfield on October 9 and Portsmouth on October 14. Those matchups offer the Clippers a chance to move forward from Monday’s narrow defeat and build momentum heading toward the postseason cutoff.

For teams that earn a spot, quarterfinal play begins October 22–24, with the remaining field advancing to the semifinals October 27–28 and championship matches October 31 at Slater Park in Pawtucket. Cumberland’s path toward that stage starts with the next opponent and another opportunity to put four match wins together.

There’s still tennis to play and work to do. After coming up one match short against Ponaganset, the Clippers will look to make the next close afternoon go their way.
