Cumberland had its chances to make Sunday’s trip to North Providence a different story. Two first-half possessions reached fourth-and-goal, but neither produced points. Those opportunities loomed large in a game that stood at just 7–0 at halftime before the Jets pulled away for a 20–0 win.

For the JV Jr Clippers, the opening half was a grind. The defense kept the game within reach, and the offense put itself in position to answer. Getting that close twice showed Cumberland could threaten. Finishing those possessions was the piece that never came together.

North Providence deserves credit for that. The Jets had an answer when Cumberland pushed toward the end zone, keeping the Clippers off the board and carrying a one-score advantage into the break.

The game was still there. The second half made it harder to reach.

As the afternoon wore on, the physical toll began to add up. Cumberland continued working, but North Providence created separation, and the Clippers couldn’t recover. What had been a tight first-half contest finished with the Jets adding 13 unanswered points after halftime.

One of the team’s leaders, Maddox Fitzsimmons, was injured during the game. We’re hoping for a smooth, quick recovery.

That leaves another lesson for a team with two more weeks to put it to use. Turning promising possessions into points would give the defense some support and give Cumberland a chance to play the next tight game on different terms.

EGW comes next, followed by Tri Town. Two games remain, and the work now is to carry those early opportunities through to the finish.
