The North Cumberland Middle School boys soccer team faced one of its toughest challenges of the young season in a hard-fought defensive battle against the Calcutt Braves of Central Falls.

Calcutt entered the matchup with an 0-2 record, but as noted in the pregame report, that record never told the full story. Both of the Braves’ early losses were tightly contested, and they proved once again that they are a much stronger team than their record indicates.

North Cumberland goalkeeper Liam Lemire played a phenomenal game in net, delivering a strong performance when the North Stars needed it most. With scoring opportunities difficult to come by, Lemire’s play helped North Cumberland withstand Calcutt’s pressure and keep the team positioned for a positive result.

Both teams exhibited tremendous extra effort and determination from beginning to end. Every possession was contested, and neither side was willing to give away an inch without a fight. North Cumberland leaned on its defensive organization, communication and composure throughout the tightly played matchup.

The battle provided another important early-season test for a North Stars team that has been dialed in since the beginning of the 2026 campaign. North Cumberland may not have been able to play the type of open game it wanted, but the team showed it can remain composed and grind through a defensive struggle against a determined opponent.

North Cumberland leaves the battle with its unbeaten record intact at 3-0-1. Beyond the impressive record, the North Stars continue to prove they can compete under different conditions—a quality that should become increasingly valuable as the season progresses and the competition grows stronger.
