Eighth graders’ night was supposed to add another celebration to North Cumberland’s strong season. Instead, Monday ended with a narrow loss and the feeling that a win had been within reach.

The NCMS boys fell 2–1 on October 5, a frustrating finish on a night recognizing their eighth graders. The North Stars entered after a stretch that included five consecutive shutouts, 6–0 victories over Burrillville and Blackstone Valley, and a 9–0 win over Scituate.

Logan Pistorio delivered NCMS’s lone goal, taking the ball end to end and finishing an impressive individual effort. Pistorio, who also plays football for the Cumberland Jr. Clippers, gave the North Stars a moment to celebrate, even if the final score wasn’t the one they wanted.

He supplied their only goal of the game. The loss supplied new goals for the team to work toward.

Everyone wants to win every time they take the field, especially on a night honoring the players preparing for their next chapter. But for young athletes, a tight 2–1 loss can teach more than another 9–0 victory ever could.

In a season filled with big wins, this kind of result sharpens focus on communication, support, composure and taking chances when they come. That’s the kind of lesson that can matter more down the line than any lopsided score.
