North Cumberland’s fairy-tale run came to a difficult finish Thursday night, as the North Stars fell 2–0 to Broad Rock Middle School in a hard-fought quarterfinal.
This one hurt. For a group that had put so much into the fall, the disappointment of having the season end was understandably heavy. They wanted another game together.
They had given themselves plenty of reasons to believe there would be one.

From an unbeaten start to convincing wins and a string of shutouts, the North Stars put together a season with plenty worth remembering. They showed how dangerous they could be going forward and how difficult they could be to break down defensively. Their recent 4–0 victory added another strong performance to that body of work and brought them into Thursday with momentum.
Broad Rock earned the result and the chance to move on. North Cumberland competed through a tough game, closing its season with the same willingness to battle that deserves recognition alongside the wins.
The final score will take a little time to settle. When it does, there is a whole fall of soccer for these boys to look back on with pride—the goals, the shutouts, and the chance to build something together in North Stars colors.

For the eighth graders moving toward high school and the younger players who will help carry this program forward, there is more ahead. Cumberland’s athletic programs have a group coming through that has already given this community plenty to cheer for.
It has been a pleasure following these boys this season. We’ll be looking for those familiar names as they take their next steps.
There is still plenty of their story left to cover.
