Clippers Look for a Breakthrough Against South Kingstown

A one-score loss at Attleboro sets up a Saturday morning trip to Narragansett.

Cumberland is 0–3 in RIIL Division I, but last Friday’s 20–13 loss at Attleboro showed how close the Clippers can push a game. Jayden Rabbitt scored twice, Manny Reyes reached the 3-yard line and Brady Smith led a late drive that ended with a final throw into the end zone.

South Kingstown enters 1–2 in Division I, and Cumberland has a real chance to break through Saturday. The time is now for the Clippers to put it all together. The talent is undeniable, as are the fight, brotherhood and determination this team has shown. If those pieces come together with mistake-free or nearly mistake-free football, this could be the week they earn their first win of the season.

This week’s schedule

  • Saturday, Oct. 3 · 11 a.m. — Cumberland at South Kingstown, at Narragansett High School.

Three Matches Give Cumberland Boys Soccer a Path Forward

Central, Portsmouth and Pawtucket Co-op fill a busy week for varsity and JV.

Cumberland stands 1–5–1 in its RIIL Division I standings. A 2–2 draw at North Providence and two goals in a narrow 3–2 loss to Barrington showed more attacking promise than the record alone suggests. Caleb Moran scored both goals in the North Providence draw.

Monday’s trip to Central is an interdivision game against a 3–7 Division II side. Portsmouth (2–3–3) should be a tighter Division I test Wednesday. Friday’s home game with Pawtucket Co-op (0–6–1) looks like a chance to convert improved attacking play into points, though Cumberland cannot assume the result. JV has the same three opponents this week.

This week’s schedule

  • Monday, Sept. 28 · 6 p.m. varsity, 7:30 p.m. JV — at Central, Conley Stadium.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 30 · 5 p.m. JV, 6:30 p.m. varsity — vs. Portsmouth, Tucker Field.
  • Friday, Oct. 2 · 5 p.m. JV, 6:30 p.m. varsity — vs. Pawtucket Co-op, Tucker Field.

Clippers Girls Soccer Heads Toward an Unbeaten La Salle Test

East Providence opens the week before a Friday meeting with the Division I leader.

Cumberland’s 7–1 Division I start has included a strong response to its first loss: Paynter Maher struck three times in a 4–1 road win at Moses Brown. Monday sends the Clippers to East Providence (2–4–2), a chance to build momentum before Friday’s demanding trip to La Salle.

La Salle is 5–0–2 and sits first in RIIL’s Division I table, making Friday the marquee varsity matchup of the week. The JV side plays East Providence and La Salle, then has two listed tournament games Saturday at Coventry. RIIL marks the separate JV fixture against King Philip as canceled; it is not part of this week’s game list.

This week’s schedule

  • Monday, Sept. 28 · 5 p.m. JV at EPHS Front Turf; 6:30 p.m. varsity at EPHS Stadium — at East Providence.
  • Friday, Oct. 2 · 5 p.m. varsity, 6:30 p.m. JV — at La Salle, Cimini Stadium.
  • Saturday, Oct. 3 · 9:15 a.m. JV vs. South Kingstown; 10:30 a.m. JV vs. Ponaganset — tournament at Coventry High School Soccer Field 1.

Field Hockey Sees Lincoln Again in Two-Game Week

A Monday game against Lincoln School precedes a quick rematch with the neighboring Lions.

Cumberland is 5–2–1 and sits atop RIIL Division II. Last week’s 1–1 tie with Lincoln was as even as the score: both teams defended hard, traded penalty-corner goals and left Tucker Field still level in the standings.

First comes Lincoln School of Providence (1–5–1) on Monday, a game in which Cumberland has the stronger record on paper. Thursday’s home meeting with Lincoln (also 5–2–1) is the sterner measuring stick and a direct chance for either side to pull ahead. The JV teams meet before Thursday’s varsity game.

This week’s schedule

  • Monday, Sept. 28 · 5:30 p.m. varsity — vs. Lincoln School, Tucker Field.
  • Thursday, Oct. 1 · 5 p.m. JV, 6:15 p.m. varsity — vs. Lincoln, Tucker Field.

Volleyball Takes Four-Match Streak on the Road

South Kingstown and Coventry offer different tests for the 6–3 Clippers.

Cumberland has climbed to 6–3 in RIIL Division I. The Clippers handled Barrington in straight sets after a 3–1 win over Prout, and their recent run includes a five-set victory over Portsmouth. That variety of finishes has helped them build a four-match winning streak.

South Kingstown enters 1–6, making Monday an opportunity to keep the streak going if Cumberland starts cleanly on the road. Coventry is 4–4 and presents the closer on-paper matchup Thursday. The JV team plays before varsity on both nights.

This week’s schedule

  • Monday, Sept. 28 · 4:45 p.m. JV, 6:30 p.m. varsity — at South Kingstown High School.
  • Thursday, Oct. 1 · 4:45 p.m. JV, 6:30 p.m. varsity — at Coventry High School gym.

Unified Volleyball Opens Its North Division Schedule

Cumberland hosts Scituate in the Wellness Center on Thursday.

The RIIL lists Cumberland and Scituate at 0–0 ahead of Thursday’s unified volleyball meeting, so there is no current win-loss form to separate them. The matchup is Cumberland’s first listed North Division contest.

An opening game is a chance for both teams to establish their rhythm together. With no results yet to compare, this preview makes no prediction from records; the important detail for supporters is the Thursday home start at the Wellness Center.

This week’s schedule

  • Thursday, Oct. 1 · 3:30 p.m. — Cumberland vs. Scituate, Cumberland High School Wellness Center.

Cumberland Tennis Balances Road Match and Division II Qualifier

A Wednesday trip to Westerly leads into Friday’s 14-team qualifying tournament.

Cumberland is 3–4 in RIIL Division II. Wednesday’s varsity opponent, Westerly, is listed at 0–6 in Division I; that makes the trip a possible confidence-builder, though interdivision records are not a direct measure of a head-to-head match.

Friday carries a different kind of weight: RIIL lists Cumberland in the 14-team Division II qualifying tournament, with singles at Slater Park and doubles at East Providence High School. The JV side also travels to Lincoln for a Wednesday match.

This week’s schedule

  • Wednesday, Sept. 30 · 4:15 p.m. JV — at Lincoln High School.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 30 · 5 p.m. varsity — at Westerly, Rotary Park.
  • Friday, Oct. 2 · 3 p.m. varsity — Division II qualifying tournament; singles at Slater Park, doubles at East Providence High School.

Unbeaten Boys Runners Host North Division Meet

Cumberland welcomes three schools to the Monastery course Tuesday.

The Cumberland boys are 3–0 in RIIL’s North Division and ranked second in the current division table. Tuesday’s home meet brings Central Falls (0–2), North Providence (0–2) and Ponaganset (2–1) to the Cumberland Monastery.

Ponaganset has the strongest listed record among the visitors, giving Cumberland the clearest test of its unbeaten start. Cross country still comes down to placements throughout the lineup, so the Clippers’ depth may matter as much as the first finisher.

This week’s schedule

  • Tuesday, Sept. 29 · 4:15 p.m. — Cumberland, Central Falls, North Providence and Ponaganset at Cumberland Monastery.

Two Unbeaten Girls Cross Country Teams Meet at the Monastery

Cumberland and Ponaganset bring matching 3–0 records to Tuesday’s meet.

Cumberland leads RIIL’s North Division girls cross country table at 3–0. Ponaganset is also 3–0, giving Tuesday’s four-team meet a particularly compelling matchup between unbeaten squads. Central Falls and North Providence are each 0–2 in the current listings.

The Clippers have a chance to defend their division lead on their home course. In a multi-team meet, the complete scoring group—not just a front runner—will determine how Cumberland fares against Ponaganset and the other visitors.

North Stars Put Unbeaten Run on the Line Twice

Woonsocket visits Monday before North Cumberland travels to Scituate Thursday.

North Cumberland sits first in the RIIL North boys soccer standings at 5–0–1. The North Stars’ recent 6–0 win over Burrillville continued a run of clean sheets and showed the range of their attack, from set-piece goals to finishes in open play.

Monday’s opponent Woonsocket is 0–1–3, and Thursday’s Scituate side is also 0–1–3. The records favor North Cumberland, but three draws apiece suggest opponents capable of keeping games tight. Two more strong defensive outings would extend the North Stars’ unbeaten start.

This week’s schedule

  • Monday, Sept. 28 · 4:45 p.m. — vs. Woonsocket at Tucker Field Upper Soccer Field.
  • Thursday, Oct. 1 · 4 p.m. — at Scituate, Manning Field.

North Cumberland Girls Seek Momentum in Two Soccer Games

A Woonsocket road trip comes before a Thursday home match with Scituate.

North Cumberland is 2–3 in the RIIL North girls soccer table. The North Stars have a chance to pull level this week, beginning with a Tuesday trip to Woonsocket, which enters 0–5.

Thursday’s home game with Scituate (3–2) appears the closer challenge on current form. A result on the road Tuesday would give North Cumberland momentum before it faces a team already above .500.

This week’s schedule

  • Tuesday, Sept. 29 · 4:45 p.m. — at Woonsocket Middle School, Hamlet Field.
  • Thursday, Oct. 1 · 4:15 p.m. — vs. Scituate at Tucker Field Upper Soccer Field.

McCourt Boys Soccer Sees Two Chances to Climb

Burrillville comes to Tucker Field Tuesday; Blackstone Valley Prep hosts Thursday.

McCourt stands 1–3–1 in the RIIL North boys soccer table. Its 2–2 draw with Calcutt last week showed it can respond in a close game. Tuesday’s opponent Burrillville has the same 1–3–1 record, setting up an especially even meeting on paper.

Thursday’s visit to Blackstone Valley Jr. High brings a 0–3–2 opponent. The records give McCourt an opening, but both teams have already played multiple draws, so finishing opportunities may decide whether McCourt can turn this week into wins.

This week’s schedule

  • Tuesday, Sept. 29 · 4 p.m. — vs. Burrillville at Tucker Field Upper Soccer Field.
  • Thursday, Oct. 1 · 4:30 p.m. — at Blackstone Valley Jr. High, Blackstone Valley Prep High School.

McCourt Girls Face Unbeaten Burrillville, Then Return Home

A difficult Tuesday trip is followed by a Friday meeting with BVP/Calcutt.

McCourt is 0–4 in the RIIL North girls soccer standings. Tuesday’s road game is a demanding one: Burrillville sits first at 5–0 and has yet to lose in league play.

The Mustangs return to Tucker Field on Friday against the BVP/Calcutt middle school co-op. RIIL lists that fixture but does not show a separate current girls-division record for the co-op, so its strength is harder to gauge from the standings. Friday offers McCourt another opportunity to find its first result.

This week’s schedule

  • Tuesday, Sept. 29 · 4 p.m. — at Burrillville Middle School.
  • Friday, Oct. 2 · 4:15 p.m. — vs. BVP/Calcutt MS Co-op at Tucker Field Upper Soccer Field.

The two Cumberland middle schools share Monday’s home course with De La Salle.

Both North Cumberland and McCourt are on the RIIL boys middle school cross country listing for Monday’s three-school meet with De La Salle. The event is at North Cumberland Middle School, giving local families one place to follow both teams.

RIIL’s middle school cross country standings do not show comparable current team records for this meet. The useful measure on Monday will be how each school’s scoring pack holds together against the other Cumberland team and De La Salle.
